Mourinho Hints at Real Madrid Comeback After Benfica Finale
Jose Mourinho has given his strongest hint so far that he might return to Real Madrid this summer, 13 years after leaving the club.
The Benfica manager spoke after his team finished the Portuguese league season with a 3-1 win over Estoril, capping off an unbeaten league run.
Mourinho had dodged questions about his future for weeks, but after Saturday’s match, he admitted a return to Madrid is possible.
“My future should be decided this week,” Mourinho said, according to Sky Sports. “I need time. I need space. I need time to make my decision.”
He also said he hasn’t received a formal offer from Real Madrid yet.
“I don’t have a proposal from Real Madrid,” he said. “But to hide, to say there is nothing, I cannot do that. There is something. But not with me directly.”
Real Madrid’s Interest Is Increasing
Real Madrid president Florentino Perez hasn’t spoken to Mourinho directly, but Sky Sports says Perez has talked with Mourinho’s agent, Jorge Mendes.
This makes the situation more serious.
Mourinho joined Benfica just eight months ago on a two-year contract, but his deal has a release clause of about £2.6 million. For Real Madrid, that amount isn’t a big hurdle.
Benfica want Mourinho to stay and has offered him a better contract, but reports say he probably won’t accept if Real Madrid makes a serious offer.
Portugal National Team Job Also Possible
Mourinho has another big option to consider.
Portugal’s national team has been interested in him for a while. They want him to take over after the World Cup and lead the team to the 2030 tournament, which Portugal will co-host with Spain and Morocco.
Coaching the national team would mean a lot to Mourinho.
Even so, Real Madrid seems like the more likely option right now.
Mourinho and Perez Remain Close
Mourinho’s relationship with Florentino Perez is still important.
They worked together during Mourinho’s first time at Real Madrid from 2010 to 2013, and Mourinho says they’ve stayed close since.
“We have been close for 13 years,” he said. “But that doesn’t mean I’ve been in the club for the last 13 years or that I am going to be.”
His comment was cautious, but he didn’t rule anything out.
In fact, it left the door open.
MourMourinho understands the pressure and expectations at Real Madrid, and Perez knows what Mourinho offers when the club needs a strong leader.y Real Madrid May Want Him Back
Real Madrid hasn’t won La Liga for two seasons, which has put more pressure on the club.
Mourinho’s first time at Madrid was intense, but he got results. His biggest league success was in the 2011/12 season, when Real Madrid won La Liga with 100 points. Sky Sports also reported that Mourinho had a 72% win rate during his first time at the club.
That record is still one of the best among modern Real Madrid managers.
For Perez, Mourinho brings experience, authority, and a familiar face. He also knows how to handle a squad full of top players and big personalities.
A Decision Could Come Quickly
Mourinho said this week will be key for his future.
So Benfica may soon find out if Saturday’s win over Estoril was Mourinho’s last league game in charge.
The club went unbeaten in the league with him, but now everyone is talking about the Real Madrid rumors.
For Mourinho, the choice is clear but not easy.
He can stay at Benfica and keep building the team, wait for the Portugal national team job, or go back to the club where he had one of the most dramatic parts of his career.
Right now, Real Madrid seems like the option with the most momentum.
