Muhammad Abubakar Adamu, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) governorship candidate for Nasarawa State, has distributed vehicles, cash, and household equipment to 163 women leaders across the state.
The former Inspector-General of Police made the distribution to support the women’s wings of the party, providing them with resources intended to facilitate their political activities and improve their welfare. The recipients, who represent various party structures within Nasarawa, received the items as part of a strategy to strengthen the SDP’s presence ahead of the upcoming elections.
The distribution, which included cars, cash, and various household tools, was documented in a report by Premium Times Nigeria.
Strengthening party grassroots
The empowerment of women leaders is a strategic component of the SDP’s approach in Nasarawa. By providing mobility through the gift of vehicles, Adamu aims to enable women leaders to move more effectively between local government areas and rural communities to coordinate party activities and mobilise voters.
The inclusion of cash and household equipment suggests an attempt to link political support with social welfare, a common practice in Nigerian political campaigning. For many women leaders, the provision of household items provides immediate domestic relief, while the cash provides liquidity for local-level political organising and grassroots engagement.
Muhammad Abubakar Adamu’s entry into the Nasarawa political arena follows his high-profile career in the Nigeria Police Force. His transition from the nation’s top police official to a gubernatorial candidate brings a different level of visibility and authority to the SDP in the state.
Political observers note that such distributions are designed to build loyalty among key influencers within the party structure. In Nasarawa, where political contests are often decided by narrow margins, securing the support of organised women’s groups is essential for any candidate seeking to build a winning coalition.
The SDP continues to position itself as a viable alternative to the dominant political parties in the state. As the election cycle progresses, the effectiveness of this empowerment programme in translating into sustained electoral support will be a key factor in the party’s campaign performance.
