The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), Sokoto State chapter, has condemned the attack on Islamic cleric Sheikh Musa Lukuwa and the subsequent mob killing of a suspected assailant.
In a statement issued by the organisation’s representative, Dr Muhammad Mansur Aliyu, the group expressed strong disapproval of both the initial assault and the extrajudicial killing that followed. The statement emphasised that no form of provocation or religious disagreement serves as a justification for violence or the taking of human life.
The incident involved an assault on the cleric, which triggered a violent reaction from a crowd. The suspected attacker was killed by the mob before security personnel could intervene to take him into custody.
Addressing the incident, Aliyu noted that the actions taken by the mob were unlawful and contrary to the principles of justice. The group has called for a thorough investigation into the attack on Sheikh Musa Lukuwa and the alleged mob killing of the suspect.
Security and legal implications of mob justice
Dr Aliyu stated that the group rejects all forms of violence, regardless of the circumstances. He argued that the mob’s decision to kill the suspect bypasses the formal judicial system and contravenes the rule of law, which is essential for maintaining order within the state.
The rise of “jungle justice” remains a critical security concern across many Nigerian communities. When citizens take the law into their own hands, it often leads to further instability and communal tension, particularly in sensitive religious environments like Sokoto.
MURIC urged the Sokoto State police command and other relevant security agencies to intervene immediately. The organisation demanded that the authorities identify those responsible for the attack on the cleric as well as the individuals who participated in the mob killing.
The statement further noted that justice must be served through the proper legal channels to prevent a breakdown of public order. The group emphasised that allowing extrajudicial killings to go unpunished encourages lawlessness and undermines the authority of the state.
The security agencies have yet to provide a formal report on the specific timeline of the events or the identity of the deceased suspect. Investigations into the motive behind the attack on Sheikh Lukuwa are expected to continue as authorities work to restore calm in the area.
