Nigerian Air Force aircraft crashes in Ondo State with 25 on board

A Nigerian Air Force (NAF) aircraft, identified as NAF 931, crashed in a swampy region of Igbokoda, Ondo State, on Monday morning.

The aircraft, which was carrying 25 people on board, went down at approximately 9 a.m. The crash site is located in difficult terrain, which has presented significant logistical challenges for search and rescue teams attempting to reach the wreckage.

Commodore Dappa, commenting on the incident, stated that investigators must remain open to all possibilities during the initial inquiry. Following the crash of the NAF 931 aircraft, he noted that nothing can be ruled out as the investigation begins.

Search and recovery operations in Ondo State

The location of the accident in the Igbokoda wetlands has complicated immediate assessment efforts. The swampy landscape requires specialised equipment and personnel to navigate, which may delay the full recovery of passengers and the retrieval of flight data recorders.

While the exact number of casualties has not yet been officially confirmed, the presence of 25 individuals on board raises concerns regarding the outcome of the crash. The Nigerian Air Force is expected to deploy dedicated recovery teams to the site to manage the operation.

Technical investigations into such military aviation accidents typically focus on mechanical failure, human error, or adverse weather conditions. The NAF is expected to establish a formal Board of Inquiry to determine the sequence of events that led to the crash. This process will include a review of the aircraft’s maintenance records and the flight crew’s recent operational history.

Local authorities in Ondo State are working alongside military personnel to secure the perimeter of the crash site. This is intended to manage the scene and ensure that recovery efforts are not disrupted.

This incident has led to renewed calls for scrutiny regarding the safety and maintenance of the Nigerian Air Force’s aerial fleet. The military command is yet to release a full manifest of the individuals on board, and further updates are expected as recovery operations continue in the swampy terrain.
