Nathaniel Bassey Faces Backlash for Legal Action Against Online Defamers

In a recent report, gospel artist Nathaniel Bassey has taken legal action against four social media users who falsely accused him of paternity concerning fellow gospel singer Mercy Chinwo.

This move was disclosed on April 3rd, 2024, with Bassey’s legal representatives highlighting the legal repercussions of defaming an individual’s character without substantiated evidence.

In Nigeria’s online sphere, it’s unfortunately common for netizens to engage in trolling celebrities, often resorting to character assassination to drive engagement on their posts.

Regrettably, the consequences of such actions are frequently disregarded, with little consideration given to the impact on the targeted individuals’ personal lives and professional careers.

Despite the potential harm inflicted, these online perpetrators seem indifferent, wielding their smartphones as weapons to propagate unfounded claims and malicious commentary.

Such behaviour not only undermines the integrity of the individuals targeted but also poses a threat to the broader digital community’s trust and civility.

In light of Nathaniel Bassey’s decision to pursue legal recourse against these defamers, some members of the online community have expressed dissent, accusing him of contradicting his teachings on forgiveness.

They argue that forgiveness should supersede legal action, urging Bassey to adopt a stance of forgiveness and move forward.

However, it’s imperative to recognize that while forgiveness holds immense value, it does not absolve individuals of accountability for their actions.

In this instance, Bassey’s pursuit of legal redress underscores the necessity of upholding justice and confronting defamation, ensuring that individuals are held responsible for their harmful online conduct.

Netizens Gaslighting Nathaniel Bassey

@Peter obi son: If Nathaniel Bassey can’t forgive these guys, why should anyone take him seriously when he preaches the gospel? Are you really practicing what you preach?

@Minders Media Productions: You see the dangers of the books they removed from the Bible? Christians do not know that it is a SIN to get angry, not to talk of fighting back. We are to suffer persecution just like Christ did. Christ never fought back. If He had defended Himself, He won’t die for us.

@ Christopher: No matter what Nathaniel Bassey should have let go all these accusations are normal in Nigeria.

Dr. Truth: Nathaniel Bassey is a Religious extremist; he’s not a Christian, Christian Music to him is just business.
