Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have apprehended a 20-year-old man in Kano State after seizing 785,000 capsules of Pregabalin. The massive haul of controlled substances was intercepted during a targeted enforcement operation in the state.
The suspect, identified as Saidu Adamu, was taken into custody following the discovery of the pharmaceutical capsules. The scale of the seizure suggests an attempt to move a substantial quantity of medication into the local market through illicit channels.
The arrest of Saidu Adamu in Kano has been confirmed by the agency as part of its ongoing efforts to disrupt the trafficking of unregulated drugs in Northern Nigeria.
Crackdown on controlled medication in Kano
Pregabalin is a prescription medication typically used to manage nerve pain and certain types of epilepsy. However, it has become a subject of intense scrutiny by Nigerian security agencies due to its rising misuse as a recreational drug among younger populations. The illegal sale of such substances often bypasses the regulatory oversight of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), posing significant public health risks.
Kano remains a critical commercial hub in the North, making it a focal point for both legal trade and the movement of illicit goods. The NDLEA has intensified its presence in the state to intercept large-scale shipments of narcotics and diverted pharmaceuticals that threaten to flood local communities.
The recovery of 785,000 capsules indicates that organised networks may be utilising the state’s commercial networks to distribute high volumes of controlled substances. Security agencies have previously noted that the influx of such medications contributes to increased crime rates and health complications among youths.
The agency is currently processing the evidence and the suspect for legal action. Saidu Adamu is expected to face prosecution in a court of law under the provisions of the NDLEA Act, which governs the possession and trafficking of controlled substances.
