The Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG) has unveiled a new digital portal designed to empower businesses by providing real-time access to proposed legislation before the National Assembly. This initiative aims to enhance regulatory predictability, allowing companies to assess the potential impact of new laws on their investment, operations, and overall cost of doing business in Nigeria.
Launched in Abuja, the Legislation and Policy Tracking Portal (LPTP) is a strategic move by the NESG to foster a more transparent and predictable regulatory environment. It addresses a long-standing challenge for the private sector, which often struggles with limited foresight into legislative changes that can significantly alter market dynamics and operational requirements.
According to an announcement by the NESG, the portal will aggregate and categorise bills, motions, and public hearing schedules, providing businesses with a consolidated view of legislative activities. Users will be able to search, filter, and receive alerts on developments relevant to their specific sectors, facilitating proactive engagement and informed decision-making.
The NESG stated that the LPTP is more than just a tracking tool; it is designed to be an analytical resource. It will offer insights into the potential economic and commercial consequences of proposed bills, helping businesses and investors understand risks and opportunities. This foresight is crucial for strategic planning, capital allocation, and ensuring compliance well in advance of new regulations coming into force.
Mr. Niyi Yusuf, Chairman of the NESG, speaking at the launch event, emphasised the portal’s role in strengthening the partnership between the private sector and the legislature. “For too long, businesses have operated with a degree of uncertainty regarding policy shifts. This portal bridges that gap, empowering enterprises with the information needed to thrive and contribute effectively to Nigeria’s economic growth,” Yusuf said. He added that the initiative aligns with the NESG’s core mandate of promoting a competitive and sustainable economic environment through public-private dialogue.
Enhancing Investor Confidence and Ease of Doing Business
The introduction of the LPTP is expected to significantly bolster investor confidence, both locally and internationally. A key determinant for investment decisions is regulatory stability and transparency. By providing a clear window into the legislative process, Nigeria can position itself as a more attractive destination for capital, reducing perceived risks associated with sudden policy changes.
The portal is anticipated to contribute to an improved ranking for Nigeria in global ‘Ease of Doing Business’ indices. One of the persistent criticisms in these assessments has been the complexity and unpredictability of regulatory frameworks. The LPTP directly addresses this by making legislative information readily accessible and understandable.
Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs), which often lack the resources to monitor legislative developments independently, stand to benefit immensely from this platform. The portal democratises access to vital regulatory intelligence, allowing SMEs to anticipate changes that could affect their costs, market access, or operational licenses, thereby levelling the playing field.
The NESG has confirmed that the portal will be regularly updated with information directly from the National Assembly. It will also feature analytical reports, expert commentaries, and opportunities for private sector feedback, creating a comprehensive resource for regulatory intelligence. The group has encouraged all businesses and stakeholders to utilise the platform to ensure their voices are heard in the policy-making process.
This initiative represents a collaborative effort between the NESG and various stakeholders, underscoring a commitment to economic reform and private sector growth. It is expected to become an indispensable tool for businesses navigating Nigeria’s dynamic regulatory landscape, fostering greater stability and stimulating sustainable development.
