An independent investigation committee has recommended a total of N1.4 billion in compensation for the victims and survivors of the mass deaths in Niger State.
The 10-member panel submitted its final report to the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, outlining a comprehensive package designed to provide both immediate financial relief and long-term support for the affected families.
Under the proposed compensation structure, each bereaved family is to receive N30 million. Additionally, the committee recommended that every survivor of the incident be paid N10 million to assist with recovery needs.
Recognising the educational disruption caused by the tragedy, the panel also recommended that the government provide scholarships for the children of the deceased. This measure is intended to ensure that the loss of breadwinners does not lead to a permanent decline in the educational prospects of the victims’ descendants.
Accountability and personnel recommendations
In addition to the financial payouts, the committee addressed the administrative consequences for personnel involved in the events leading to the deaths. The panel has recommended the release of security officers who were cleared of any culpability during the investigation.
This recommendation is part of an effort to resolve the legal ambiguities surrounding the incident, providing a distinction between those responsible for the tragedy and those acting within the scope of their duties.
The findings, which include recommendations for scholarships for victims’ children and N1.4bn in compensations, serve as a formal roadmap for the government’s restorative justice efforts.
The total sum of N1.4 billion represents a significant fiscal commitment from the government, intended to mitigate the socio-economic devastation in the affected parts of Niger State.
While the submission of the report is a milestone, the federal government has not yet announced a timeline for the disbursement of the funds. Stakeholders are now awaiting a formal response from the Ministry of Interior regarding the adoption of these recommendations and the next steps for the scholarship programme.
