Niger State is set to benefit from a significant federal government investment in road infrastructure, with the flagging off of the crucial Lambata-Bida-Mokwa Highway marking the commencement of projects spanning 1,055 kilometres across the state. The Federal Government has committed a total of N1.8 trillion to these extensive road networks, aimed at enhancing connectivity and economic activities.
Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago officially inaugurated the reconstruction of the Lambata-Bida-Mokwa Highway, a vital artery linking major commercial and agricultural centres within Niger State and connecting it to other parts of Nigeria. The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, confirmed the substantial federal investment, emphasising the government’s resolve to improve national infrastructure.
This extensive project, encompassing over a thousand kilometres of federal roads, is expected to revitalise transportation networks, reduce travel time, and significantly boost economic development, particularly in agriculture and trade, across Niger State. The N1.8 trillion allocation underscores a concerted effort to address long-standing infrastructure deficits in the region, which have hampered economic potential for decades.
Revitalising Key Economic Corridors
The Lambata-Bida-Mokwa road, a critical stretch for interstate commerce and agricultural haulage, has historically presented significant challenges for transporters and commuters due to its severe state of disrepair. Its rehabilitation is anticipated to facilitate the efficient movement of goods, especially farm produce, from rural areas to urban markets and beyond, thereby directly supporting local farmers and reducing post-harvest losses that plague the agricultural sector.
Minister Idris, speaking on the development, highlighted the renewed focus of the Bola Tinubu administration on providing durable infrastructure to spur economic growth nationwide. He noted that the investment is not merely about constructing roads but about creating a backbone for sustainable development, job creation, and improved livelihoods for millions of Nigerians dependent on these routes.
Governor Bago, during the flagging-off ceremony, expressed profound gratitude for the federal government’s intervention, noting that improved roads are fundamental to unlocking Niger State’s vast economic potential, particularly in its rich agricultural landscape and mineral resources. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to collaborating closely with federal agencies, including the Federal Ministry of Works, to ensure the timely and quality completion of all allocated projects. The 1,055km road network is designed to connect various local government areas, improving access to essential services and promoting vibrant inter-community trade.
Beyond direct economic benefits, the enhanced road infrastructure is also expected to have positive implications for security and social welfare. Better roads enable quicker response times for emergency services and security personnel, while improving access to healthcare and education facilities for rural communities. The comprehensive nature of this investment signals a strategic approach to regional development, aiming to integrate Niger State more effectively into the national economic framework and improve the overall ease of doing business.
The successful execution of these projects will serve as a crucial step towards modernising Nigeria’s transport infrastructure, with an eye on its broader impact on regional trade and investment. The Federal Ministry of Works is expected to provide strict oversight to ensure adherence to construction standards and project timelines, with the ultimate goal of delivering lasting infrastructure that supports Nigeria’s economic aspirations.
