Nigeria Launches Visa Agency, Asfaar to Tackle Fake Documents

Nigeria has taken a major step in reforming its visa process with the launch of Asfaar, the country’s first dedicated visa application agency.

The move, announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is aimed at curbing the growing challenge of document fraud while also making it easier for Nigerians to process travel requests.

At the unveiling in Abuja, Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Tuggar, represented by his media aide Alkasim Abdulkadir, described the centre as a crucial initiative that strengthens Nigeria’s sovereignty and credibility in international relations.

According to him, many countries have long raised concerns about the reliability of Nigeria’s data, which has often led to stricter visa restrictions for Nigerian travelers.

The agency will work closely with institutions like the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) and the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) to improve the integrity of Nigeria’s data systems.

By cleaning up inconsistencies in official records and travel documents, the government hopes to eliminate the loopholes that have encouraged fraudulent activities.

Chief Executive Officer of Asfaar, Jamil Hausawi, explained that the agency was designed to address the frustrations Nigerians frequently encounter when applying for visas.

He stressed that while embassies will still have the final say in approving applications, Asfaar will act as a bridge between applicants and relevant government bodies, reducing bottlenecks and delays.

Hausawi also outlined a phased rollout plan for the agency. The first stage will focus on Arab and Gulf countries, which account for a significant volume of Nigerian travelers. The second phase will extend to Asia and Australia, before eventually reaching Europe and the United States.

For Nigerians weary of prolonged visa processes and the stigma of document fraud, this development could mark a turning point.

Asfaar’s operations, officials say, are already underway, with full integration into foreign embassies and consulates expected in the coming months.

Beyond easing travel, the centre is also expected to support Nigeria’s diplomatic push to challenge visa restrictions placed on its citizens abroad. By presenting cleaner, more reliable data, the government hopes to rebuild trust with foreign partners and create fairer travel opportunities for Nigerians.
