Nigeria Pushes Rail Links for Refineries and Ports

Nigeria is pushing ahead with plans to link its ports, refineries, and fuel depots to the national railway network to address critical distribution gaps.

The drive to integrate these key energy hubs with the rail system comes as the expansion of domestic refining capacity exposes long-standing weaknesses in the country’s transport and distribution infrastructure.

The shift toward rail is being accelerated by the operational scale of domestic facilities, most notably the Dangote refinery, which has highlighted the inefficiency of relying primarily on road transport for bulk fuel movement.

Current logistics frameworks have struggled to keep pace with the increased output from domestic refineries. By reconnecting ports and fuel depots to the national rail network, the government aims to reduce the pressure on Nigerian roads and lower the cost of transporting refined products to various parts of the country.

The move is intended to create a more seamless supply chain, moving petroleum products from production points and import terminals to depots and final markets via rail, which offers higher volume capacity and greater safety than road tankers.

The development focuses on overcoming the infrastructure deficits that have historically hindered the efficient movement of energy resources within Nigeria’s borders.
