The Nigeria Police Force has repatriated a Chinese national, Zhang Shijie, to Guangzhou, China, following his arrest for the alleged large-scale smuggling of endangered African Rosewood.
The operation was coordinated through the INTERPOL National Central Bureau (NCB) in Abuja. The repatriation follows a targeted effort to apprehend the fugitive, who was wanted in connection with the illegal trade of protected timber species.
Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Aniete Iniedu, confirmed the return of the suspect to China in a statement released on Thursday, noting that the action aligns with international cooperation on combating transnational organised crime.
Combating Illegal Timber Trafficking
African Rosewood, often referred to as Pterocarpus erinaceus, is highly prized in Asian markets, particularly in China, for luxury furniture and traditional carvings. Due to its slow growth and high value, the species has faced severe over-exploitation, leading to its classification as an endangered species under various international environmental frameworks.
The illegal extraction of this timber often involves complex networks of local collaborators and foreign financiers who bypass forestry regulations and export laws. By targeting high-level operators like Zhang Shijie, Nigerian authorities aim to disrupt the supply chains that facilitate the depletion of the country’s natural forest resources.
The involvement of the INTERPOL National Central Bureau indicates that the suspect was likely part of a broader international investigation. INTERPOL’s role in this case ensures that fugitives cannot use national borders as shields to evade justice for environmental crimes committed across different jurisdictions.
This move comes amid increased pressure on the Nigerian government to strengthen the enforcement of the National Forestry Policy and the various laws governing the export of endangered flora and fauna. The illegal trade in rosewood not only causes ecological imbalance but also results in significant loss of potential legitimate revenue for the state.
The Nigerian Police Force has stated that it will continue to collaborate with international law enforcement agencies to track down individuals involved in the illegal exploitation of Nigeria’s natural resources. The repatriation of Zhang Shijie serves as a signal to other foreign nationals operating illicit trade networks within the country.
The suspect is now expected to face legal proceedings in Guangzhou, where Chinese authorities will determine the charges and penalties associated with the smuggling operations.
