Nigerian Air Force disrupts kidnappers’ operations in Benue

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has carried out an operation to disrupt the activities of kidnappers in Benue State, aiming to reclaim security in parts of the Middle Belt.

The military confirmed the success of the operation in Benue, noting that the mission is part of a broader strategy to deny criminal elements freedom of action. According to the NAF, the outcome is intended to support efforts to restore safety and security to communities frequently targeted by armed groups.

The operation comes at a time when Benue State continues to face persistent threats from organised crime. Kidnapping for ransom has become a major concern for residents and businesses, often occurring in rural areas where terrain makes traditional policing difficult.

Security implications for the Middle Belt

The involvement of air assets in internal security operations marks a tactical shift in how the Nigerian military addresses banditry. By utilising aerial surveillance and strike capabilities, the Air Force can target criminal hideouts in the dense forest covers that provide sanctuary to kidnappers in the region.

For Benue, often referred to as the “Food Basket of the Nation,” the consequences of kidnapping are both social and economic. Constant insecurity in farming communities prevents agricultural workers from accessing their fields, which threatens local food security and drives up prices in neighbouring states. The presence of criminal elements in rural corridors also disrupts the movement of goods and people.

While the military has not released specific details regarding the number of suspects detained or the quantity of arms recovered during this particular mission, the NAF has maintained that its resolve to tackle criminal elements remains firm. The operation is seen as a necessary step in reducing the operational space available to bandit groups.

Security agencies are expected to continue intelligence-led patrols and aerial surveillance to prevent criminal networks from regrouping in the state’s forest reserves.
