Pains of the Nigerian Army: Is a N1,500 Daily Feeding Allowance Good?
In a recent announcement, the Nigerian Army declared an increase in the Ration Cash Allowance (RCA) for its personnel from N1,200 to N1,500. While this might appear as a positive step towards improving the welfare of troops, it is essential to scrutinize the impact of this increment in the context of the Naira’s significant devaluation.
The RCA is intended to cover the feeding expenses of military personnel when central feeding is not feasible. This allowance is applicable under various conditions, including residential courses, guard duties, hospital admissions, military exercises, and operations. However, the question arises: Is this increase sufficient to address the rising cost of living?
The adjustment, effective from February 1, 2024, is part of the Chief of Army Staff’s initiative to transform the Nigerian Army into a well-trained, equipped, and highly motivated force. However, considering the economic challenges that Nigeria is facing, particularly the devaluation of the Naira, this increase seems minuscule.
The devaluation of the Naira has led to a surge in the prices of goods and services, affecting the purchasing power of ordinary citizens, including military personnel. The soldiers, who are at the forefront of combating security challenges in various parts of the country, are already grappling with issues such as poor feeding, inadequate salaries, and lack of proper medical care.
The recent increment in RCA, while a step in the right direction, falls short of addressing the real needs of the troops. The soldiers’ complaints about insufficient food and inadequate equipment highlight the urgent need for a more substantial review of their welfare packages.
Furthermore, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, has acknowledged the hardships faced by military personnel, including low salaries that do not match the demands of their work. He has advocated for better compensation to boost their morale and encourage them to perform more effectively.
In light of these challenges, the marginal increase in the feeding allowance seems like a drop in the ocean. It is crucial for the Nigerian government and military authorities to undertake a comprehensive review of the soldiers’ welfare, considering the current economic realities. Ensuring that the troops are well-fed, adequately compensated, and properly equipped is essential for maintaining their morale and effectiveness in safeguarding the nation.
