Nigerian Government Releases Q3 2023 Budget Report After Public Demand
The Nigerian government recently released the budget performance report for President Bola Tinubu’s first quarter in office, from June to September 2023.
This action came three weeks after SaharaReporters highlighted a delay in the publication of these reports, which are legally required.
Previously, the Tinubu administration had not published any budget performance reports since taking office. This lack of transparency was first noticed when no new reports were found on the Budget Office of the Federation’s website.
This marks a shift from past practices, as it is the first time since 2015 that a Nigerian administration has failed to release these reports right after taking office.
Budget performance reports are critical for ensuring government transparency and accountability. They detail how public funds are spent and how resources are allocated, offering citizens insight into government financial practices.
Regular publication of these reports, every three months, is a standard procedure meant to uphold fiscal responsibility.
However, despite the recent release, the government has not yet published reports for the fourth quarter of 2023 and the first quarter of 2024.
