Nigerians Spend ₦1.54 Trillion on Beer and Alcohol in 9 Months
ThePapers reports that in the first nine months of 2025, Nigerians spent an estimate of ₦1.54 trillion on beer and other alcoholic beverages, according to unaudited financial data from the country’s top brewers.
Despite ongoing economic pressure from inflation and high production costs, Nigerian Breweries plc, International Breweries plc, and Champion Breweries plcs combined revenues from January through September show a strong demand for beer.
Market Leaders Report Growth
- The largest brewer in the nation, Nigerian Breweries Plc, reported revenues of almost ₦1.05 trillion.
- International Breweries Plc recorded revenue of almost ₦472.6 billion.
- Champion Breweries Plc contributed ₦21.4 billion to the total.
Industry analysts said these figures highlight Nigeria’s beer demand’s tenacity.
Strong brand loyalty drives it and deeply ingrained cultural consumption habits, even as some customers their purchasing habits because of the hardship of rising inflation.
Economic Implications
Some breweries, most notably Nigerian Breweries, reported a return to profitability in 2025 following a loss in 2024. So far, they have recovered from losses in the preceding year.
Although this comeback shows how resilient Nigeria’s beer business is, experts warn that while strong sales numbers are remarkable, they do not always translate into commensurate gains for the entire economy.
High revenue does not always translate into more economic development because of factors including cost of imported raw materials, production costs, and currency depreciation
