The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to implement immediate measures to protect citizens from the escalating cost of petrol. The labour movement warned that the federal government cannot afford to remain passive as the latest surge in pump prices deepens economic hardship across the country.
The NLC’s demand comes amid recent upward adjustments in fuel prices, which have placed additional strain on the purchasing power of Nigerian households. The union emphasised that the rising cost of fuel is a primary driver of inflation, affecting everything from transportation to food security.
According to the labour union’s recent statement, the government must move beyond rhetoric and provide tangible relief to the most vulnerable sections of the population.
Economic pressure on Nigerian households
The recent volatility in petrol pricing has created a ripple effect throughout the Nigerian economy. As fuel costs rise, transport operators have been forced to increase fares, a move that directly increases the cost of moving goods and people across the federation. This, in turn, has contributed to a sharp rise in the prices of essential commodities, particularly food items.
The NLC argued that the current economic climate requires proactive intervention rather than observation. The union is advocating for targeted social safety nets and economic cushions that can mitigate the impact of the subsidy removal era’s ongoing price adjustments.
Since the removal of the petrol subsidy, the Nigerian economy has faced significant inflationary pressures. While the administration maintains that these reforms are necessary for long-term fiscal stability, the NLC maintains that the immediate suffering of the populace must be addressed to prevent social unrest.
The union’s position reflects the growing tension between the government’s macroeconomic reform agenda and the immediate survival needs of the citizenry. The NLC has signalled that it will continue to monitor the situation closely and is prepared to take further action if the government fails to provide a clear roadmap for cushioning the effect of fuel price hikes.
The presidency has yet to issue a formal response to the specific demands for immediate cushioning measures proposed by the labour union.
