The Northern Youths Network (NYN) has strongly condemned Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike’s advocacy for a ‘Rainbow Coalition’ within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), accusing him of pursuing personal ambitions ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a recent statement, the group asserted that Mr. Wike’s efforts to unite diverse political figures under the APC banner were a deceptive stunt, orchestrated for his individual gain rather than the genuine strengthening of the party. The NYN drew parallels between Mr. Wike’s current manoeuvres and his past political strategies within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
“Just as he did with the PDP in the past, using lackeys from Kano and Edo states, the same script is being played all over again; this time in the APC,” the Northern Youths Network stated, urging the APC leadership to be wary of his intentions.
Mr. Wike, a former PDP governor of Rivers State, has been a vocal proponent of broadening the APC’s base by inviting members from other political parties. He has publicly articulated that his vision for a ‘Rainbow Coalition’ is aimed at fostering national unity and cohesion, ensuring a more inclusive political landscape.
However, the NYN, through its spokesperson, Abubakar Musa, rejected this rationale, claiming that Mr. Wike’s history suggests a pattern of destabilising political structures for his own advancement. The group highlighted his prominent role among the G5 governors—a faction of five aggrieved PDP governors (Rivers, Benue, Oyo, Abia, and Enugu states) who withheld support for their party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, significantly impacting the PDP’s electoral performance.
The youth network further argued that Mr. Wike’s current political activities are a calculated distraction from President Bola Tinubu’s ongoing development agenda. They called on President Tinubu and the national leadership of the APC to exercise caution regarding the Minister’s proposals, alleging that his true motive is to sow discord and reposition himself for future political relevance at the expense of party stability.
Political Manoeuvring Ahead of 2027
Mr. Wike’s transition from a key opposition figure to a minister in an APC-led government has been one of the most significant political developments since the 2023 elections. His influence remains substantial, and his recent pronouncements have been interpreted by many as early jostling for power ahead of the 2027 election cycle.
