Governors from Nigeria’s Northwest geopolitical zone have presented a strategic roadmap to international investors and development institutions in New York to secure funding for regional stability and growth.
The document, titled the Northwest Peace, Security and Development Framework 2026–2030, was unveiled during an event held on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). The governors are seeking multilateral support to implement a coordinated approach to the security and economic challenges facing the seven states in the zone.
The presentation of the Northwest Peace, Security and Development Framework 2026–2030 marks a coordinated attempt by the regional leadership to move beyond individual state-level responses and engage global financial partners for long-term regional planning.
Addressing regional insecurity and economic stability
The Northwest region—comprising Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Sokoto, Zamfara, and Jigawa—has faced persistent security threats, including banditry, large-scale kidnappings, and communal conflicts. These disruptions have directly impacted the agricultural sector, which is the primary livelihood for millions of residents, and have slowed down trade across the sub-region.
By engaging with development institutions in New York, the governors aim to bridge the funding gap required to modernise security infrastructure and stimulate economic activities. The framework focuses on integrating security measures with development projects, such as improved rural infrastructure and agricultural support, to create an environment conducive to private investment.
The five-year plan seeks to move the region away from reactive security operations toward a more structured development model. This involves attracting foreign direct investment (FDI) into sectors like agribusiness and manufacturing, which have been hampered by the prevailing insecurity.
The regional leadership is now expected to enter follow-up negotiations with various international agencies and private investors to determine the specific capital requirements and implementation timelines for the framework.
