NUC Approves 33 New Universities, Pushing Nigeria’s Total to 309

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has approved 33 new universities in 2025, raising Nigeria’s total number of universities to 309.

Out of the 33 newly approved universities, 20 are private, 7 are federal, and 6 are state-owned.

With these additions, Nigeria’s university count now stands at 168 private universities, 74 federal universities, and 67 state universities, for a total of 309.
