Ogun Crime Watch urges police to question Nollywood actor

The Ogun Crime Watch has called on the Nigeria Police Force to invite a Nollywood actor for questioning following allegations that he disseminated false information regarding the emergency response to the Saapade accident in Ogun State.

The group’s demand follows a video released by the actor, in which he reportedly criticised the efficiency and speed of emergency services after the accident occurred. The advocacy group expressed concern that the claims made in the video lack factual basis and could mislead the public.

According to the Ogun Crime Watch, the actor’s statements regarding the incident are unfounded and threaten to undermine public confidence in local emergency protocols and responders.

Allegations of partisan motives

The Ogun Crime Watch stated that the timing of the video release is particularly suspicious. The group suggested that the actor’s decision to go public with these specific claims indicates a partisan motive rather than a sincere interest in public welfare or the investigation of the accident.

In a statement concerning the Saapade accident and the actor’s subsequent claims, the group argued that the video could potentially cause unnecessary panic or distrust in state emergency services.

The Saapade accident has drawn significant attention within Ogun State, with public discussions focusing on road safety and the effectiveness of rapid response units. While the actor’s video aimed to highlight perceived failures in the response, the Ogun Crime Watch maintains that the information presented was a fabrication intended to serve a specific agenda.

Security agencies and civil society groups in Nigeria have frequently cautioned the public against using social media platforms to spread unverified or inflammatory information during crisis situations. Such actions can hamper official investigations and create social tension within communities.

The actor has not yet responded to the allegations made by the Ogun Crime Watch. Meanwhile, the Nigeria Police Force has not confirmed whether it will act on the group’s request to summon the entertainer for questioning.
