The death toll from suspected poisoning in the Odigbo communities of Ondo State has risen to 30 people. At least 50 other residents are currently receiving medical treatment in various hospitals following the reported consumption of suspected locally produced alcoholic drinks or herbal concoctions.
The incident is concentrated within the Odigbo Local Government Area (LGA). The surge in fatalities follows reports of rising casualties in Odigbo communities, where the death toll has now reached 30.
Medical teams are working to stabilise the victims, while local authorities have begun to assess the scale of the contamination within the affected communities.
Public health risks of unregulated local substances
The tragedy in Odigbo brings renewed attention to a recurring and deadly issue in many parts of Nigeria, where the consumption of locally brewed alcohol and herbal mixtures is common. These substances, often produced in unregulated, home-based environments, frequently lack the quality control and safety measures required by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).
In many rural areas, the production of locally brewed spirits, such as ogogoro, and potent herbal mixtures, commonly known as agbo, occurs without any official oversight. Because these products are manufactured in makeshift settings, they are prone to contamination. The presence of methanol in such illicit brews is a documented cause of mass poisoning incidents across various states in Nigeria. Methanol poisoning can lead to permanent neurological damage, blindness, or sudden death, making these unregulated products a constant threat to public safety.
Medical professionals attending to the 50 victims currently in hospital have noted that the symptoms appeared with alarming speed. Many patients presented with acute abdominal pain, severe vomiting, and respiratory distress shortly after consuming the suspected substances. The high mortality rate observed in Odigbo suggests that the batch of drinks or concoctions involved may have contained highly toxic levels of chemical contaminants, possibly as a result of improper distillation or the addition of harmful additives.
The sudden influx of casualties has also placed significant pressure on the healthcare infrastructure within the Odigbo Local Government Area. Local medical facilities are working at capacity to manage the number of patients in critical condition, as health officials attempt to coordinate a more comprehensive response to the crisis.
Health advocates have called for increased public awareness campaigns to educate rural populations on the dangers of consuming unverified substances. They emphasise that while local brews and herbal remedies are deeply embedded in the culture, the lack of regulation makes them a high-risk choice for consumer safety.
While no official statement has been released by the Ondo State Ministry of Health, local health workers are awaiting guidance on the specific protocols for treating the victims of this suspected chemical poisoning. Authorities are expected to launch an investigation to identify the production sites and the individuals responsible for the distribution of the suspected poisonous substances.
