The Oyo State government has expressed relief following the release of 20 prospective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members who were recently abducted by gunmen in Imo State.
The group, who were travelling from Ibadan, were intercepted by armed men on the Onitsha-Owerri expressway on 1 October. The abduction of the young Nigerians caused significant concern regarding the safety of prospective corps members as they travel across state lines for their mandatory national service.
State officials reacted to the release of the abducted corps members in Imo, noting that the successful return of the youths provides much-needed closure to the distressing incident.
The victims were part of a cohort of prospective corps members in transit to their various places of primary assignment. The Onitsha-Owerri expressway has been identified by security analysts as a high-risk corridor due to frequent reports of highway robbery and kidnapping along the route.
Security challenges on major transit routes
The incident has brought renewed attention to the security vulnerabilities faced by Nigerian youths, particularly during the NYSC mobilisation periods. During these windows, large numbers of young citizens move through various states, often making them targets for criminal elements operating on major federal highways.
While the specific details regarding the circumstances of their release—including whether security interventions or negotiations were involved—have not been formally detailed by the state government, the primary focus remains on the safe return of the individuals. The abduction on 1 October had prompted immediate calls for increased security presence along the eastern and western transit corridors.
The Oyo State government’s response follows several days of uncertainty regarding the whereabouts of the 20 members. The event serves as a reminder of the ongoing logistical and security hurdles that commuters face when navigating major Nigerian expressways.
Security agencies in both Imo and Oyo states are expected to maintain heightened patrols along these critical transit routes to prevent further attacks on travellers.
