The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) National Chairman, Turaki, has cautioned Nigerians against the practice of exchanging their votes for cash or food items ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The warning was issued on Monday during the Bala Abdulkadir Muhammed Colloquium in Bauchi State, an event organised to mark the 68th birthday of the Bauchi State Governor. Addressing participants, the PDP leader emphasised that the short-term gains of receiving bribes do not justify the long-term consequences of poor governance.
In his address, the chairman specifically referred to the phenomenon of trading votes for “spaghetti,” a colloquialism used in Nigerian politics to describe the distribution of small food items and minor cash incentives by political actors to influence voters. He urged the electorate to prioritise competence and policy over such material inducements.
Electoral integrity and the 2027 polls
The call for voter discipline comes as political activities in Nigeria begin to intensify in preparation for the 2027 election cycle. In previous election years, civil society organisations and international observers have frequently reported the prevalence of vote-buying, where candidates or their agents use financial incentives to secure support at polling units.
Political analysts have argued that this culture of inducement undermines the democratic mandate, as elected officials may feel pressured to prioritise returning the “investment” made during campaigns over delivering essential public services. This cycle of patronage often leads to a lack of accountability in governance.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is under increasing pressure to refine its voter education programmes and enforcement mechanisms. While the commission has introduced various technological interventions to secure the ballot, the human element of inducement remains a significant hurdle to achieving credible and transparent elections.
The colloquium in Bauchi served as a platform for various political stakeholders to discuss the socio-political trajectory of the state and the nation. By using the Governor’s birthday celebration to address electoral integrity, the PDP leadership aimed to engage the electorate on the importance of making informed decisions during the next polls.
The effectiveness of these warnings will depend on the ability of the electorate to resist inducement and the capacity of security agencies and INEC to monitor campaign activities and curb the influence of illicit funding during the 2027 electoral process.
