Nine people were killed by gunmen in a bus attack in Plateau State, just as the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, arrived in the state to oversee security operations.

During his visit, Lieutenant General Shaibu directed troops to maintain and increase pressure on criminal elements operating within the state to prevent further attacks on civilians and transit routes.
Nasiru Garba, the bus conductor and the only survivor of the attack, provided a harrowing account of the incident. He stated that the driver had stopped the vehicle to allow five passengers to disembark when the gunmen suddenly opened fire on the occupants.
Military response to rising insecurity
The attack coincides with the Chief of Army Staff’s visit, which is intended to assess the security landscape and review tactical approaches against the various armed groups terrorising the North-Central zone.
The incident adds to a pattern of violence in Plateau State, where unidentified armed groups frequently target rural communities and commuters. While the military has increased its presence in the area, the bus attack indicates that criminal elements still possess the capacity to strike during active security assessments.
The directive from the COAS to “sustain pressure” aims to disrupt the movements of bandits and communal attackers who frequently use transport corridors to move between locations. Security analysts have noted that the ability of gunmen to target moving vehicles suggests a need for more robust intelligence-led operations and improved highway patrolling.
Local residents and commuters have expressed growing concern regarding the safety of travel between major towns in the state. As the military implements orders to intensify operations against criminal hideouts, the focus remains on whether these measures will provide lasting protection for travellers.
Security agencies have yet to release a formal statement regarding the identity of the gunmen or the specific location where the ambush took place.
