The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in Plateau State has stated that the recent surge of violent attacks in Mangu Local Government Area reveals critical security vulnerabilities, despite the deployment of additional military personnel to restore stability.
The position of the legal body follows the Nigerian Army’s recent deployment of 178 personnel to reinforce security operations across vulnerable communities in the local government area. While the troop reinforcement was intended to deter criminal elements and protect residents, legal practitioners in the state argue that reactive deployments fall short of addressing structural security lapses.
According to the association, the persistence of violence despite the presence of security forces points to fundamental flaws in intelligence gathering, rapid response mechanisms, and tactical coordination on the ground.
Persistent Vulnerabilities in Plateau Communities
Mangu Local Government Area, alongside several other districts in Plateau State, has faced recurring security challenges marked by communal clashes, ambushes, and rural attacks that have displaced hundreds of residents over the years. Security agencies have repeatedly introduced special task forces and operational reinforcements to curb the violence, yet flashpoints continue to experience security breaches.
The Plateau NBA maintained that sustainable peace requires more than the temporary numerical boost of security personnel. The association called for proactive intelligence sharing, community engagement, and the prosecution of perpetrators to serve as a deterrent. Legal observers in the state note that communities remain anxious as they await concrete proof that the newly deployed troops will alter the security dynamic.
Security and defence authorities are expected to review current operational strategies in the region to address the gaps highlighted by local professional bodies and community leaders.
