The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has adopted a comprehensive security roadmap designed to safeguard the 2027 general elections. The decision follows the conclusion of the 2026 Conference on Advisory and Security Policy Operations (CARSPO), a high-level retreat aimed at refining the force’s strategic approach to national security and electoral stability.
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Disu directed senior officers to ensure that the resolutions reached during the conference are immediately translated into practical actions. He emphasised that the new protocols must be implemented across all police commands and formations nationwide to ensure operational readiness.
The adoption of this roadmap marks the beginning of a structured preparatory phase for the NPF, as the force seeks to address recurring security challenges faced during previous electoral cycles. By establishing these guidelines well in advance, the police leadership intends to build operational capacity and intelligence-led policing structures ahead of the 2027 polls.
Operationalising election security strategies
During the closing ceremony of the CARSPO 2026 retreat, IGP Disu stated the importance of moving beyond theoretical planning. The Inspector General’s charge to senior officers focuses on the decentralisation of the roadmap, ensuring that officers at the local and divisional levels understand their specific roles in maintaining order.
The roadmap is expected to cover several critical areas, including crowd control, the protection of electoral materials, and the deployment of personnel to sensitive polling units. It also places a focus on inter-agency cooperation and the use of technology to monitor potential flashpoints of violence.
The 2027 election cycle is viewed as a critical test for Nigeria’s democratic institutions. Security experts have frequently pointed to the need for more proactive policing to mitigate political violence and ensure the safety of voters. The NPF’s early adoption of a security framework aims to mitigate these risks by establishing clear lines of command and accountability well before the election period begins.
The implementation of these resolutions will now fall on the shoulders of various Zonal and State Command heads. These officers are expected to integrate the CARSPO 2026 resolutions into their respective command duties and report on progress to the Force Headquarters.
