The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has arrested a 27-year-old woman for the alleged murder of her newborn baby in the Jabi area of Abuja.
The suspect, identified as Precious Yohanna, was taken into custody following allegations that she used a razor blade to end the life of the infant. The presence of the weapon at the scene has been cited as a key element in the preliminary investigation. The incident has caused significant distress within the Jabi community and is currently under intense investigation by the FCT Command.
Police officials confirmed the arrest and stated that they are working to determine the exact circumstances that led to the tragedy. The arrest was made after police received reports regarding the death of the infant in Jabi.
Police investigation and legal implications
Investigators are currently examining the scene and reviewing available evidence to establish a clear timeline of the event. While the motive behind the alleged killing remains unknown, the FCT Police Command is looking into all possibilities, including the mental health status of the suspect at the time of the incident. The command is also coordinating with medical professionals to understand if any immediate medical interventions were attempted prior to the discovery of the infant.
Under the Nigerian Criminal Code, the killing of a human being, including a newborn, is treated as a capital offence. If the investigation yields sufficient evidence to prove murder, Yohanna could face life imprisonment or other severe penalties as determined by the court. The police are expected to conclude their preliminary findings before the case is formally filed in court.
The incident has raised concerns regarding maternal health and the support systems available for new mothers in the FCT. While the police focus remains strictly on the criminal aspect of the case, local community leaders have called for increased awareness regarding mental health crises during the postpartum period.
At present, Precious Yohanna remains in police custody. The FCT Command is expected to present the suspect before a magistrate for formal charging once the investigation and forensic processes are concluded.
