The State Criminal Investigations Department (SCID) in Owerri has commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding severe burns suffered by a 14-year-old girl. The teenager, an indigene of Akwa Ibom State, sustained the injuries while under the care of her aunt in Imo State.
The incident came to light after a video documenting the girl’s condition was shared on social media. The matter was formally reported to the police following the circulation of a disturbing video by a journalist on Facebook, which prompted calls for justice and immediate state intervention.
The victim, who was staying with her relative in Imo State, is currently receiving medical attention as authorities work to determine the cause of the injury. The involvement of the SCID indicates that the police are treating the matter as a potential criminal case involving either gross negligence or intentional harm.
Police probe cause of injury
Investigators at the Owerri-based unit are currently examining evidence to establish whether the burns were the result of an accidental mishap or a deliberate act of violence. The probe is expected to scrutinise the level of supervision provided by the aunt and any other persons present in the household at the time of the incident.
The case has sparked discussions regarding the safety and welfare of children who are sent to live with relatives in different states across Nigeria. While many families rely on kin for childcare, the lack of formal monitoring in domestic settings often leaves minors vulnerable to neglect or abuse.
