Pre-Takeoff Fault in Dana Aircraft Causes Panic Among Abuja-Bound Passengers

A recent incident involving a Dana Air aircraft scheduled for a flight from Lagos to Abuja has stirred significant concern and panic among passengers and airport staff. Contrary to online claims of an engine explosion, Dana Air clarified that the aircraft experienced a pre-takeoff fault, not an explosion. This clarification came amidst rising anxieties following the incident at the Murtala Muhammad Airport Terminal Two (MM2) on Wednesday morning.

Passengers aboard the flight, which was scheduled to depart around 11 a.m., reported hearing a loud explosion-like sound just as the aircraft was about to take off. This sound, coupled with the recent mishaps in the country’s aviation sector, triggered a wave of panic among those on board.

However, Dana Air’s statement categorically denied any explosion, emphasizing that it was a fault that occurred before the plane could leave the ground.

One of the passengers, speaking to Daily Trust, expressed their relief that the incident occurred while the plane was still on the runway. According to this passenger, there was a fear that the plane had lost both of its engines following the loud sounds.

“The Captain was trying to manage the situation but the report we had was that the plane lost its two engines. We had two explosions and the plane lost two engines. It was God that saved us, it would have been a big disaster,” the passenger recounted.

The Pilot-in-Command made the crucial decision to abort take-off, a move that, while causing inconvenience and delay, potentially averted a more serious crisis. Following the incident, passengers found themselves stranded at the airport, with reports indicating that there was little immediate communication or resolution offered by the airline.

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) was reportedly informed of the incident, but passengers expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of immediate action or response. As of the time of the report, the passengers were still waiting for an alternative arrangement or further communication from Dana Air.

This incident brings to light the crucial importance of aircraft maintenance and safety protocols, especially in a country where air travel mishaps have raised public concerns. The quick response of the flight crew in aborting the take-off likely prevented a more severe incident.

However, the ensuing confusion and lack of prompt communication highlight areas where airlines and regulatory bodies can improve, particularly in crisis management and passenger support during unforeseen events.
