The Federal Government has thanked the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) for a donation of $265,854 intended to facilitate the evacuation of Nigerians escaping xenophobic and Afrophobic attacks in South Africa.
The funds are specifically earmarked for evacuation aid, providing financial support for the logistics of moving distressed citizens out of danger zones and back to Nigeria. The government’s acknowledgement comes as it manages the fallout from renewed waves of violence targeting foreign nationals, particularly those from other African countries, in South African cities.
These attacks, described as both xenophobic and Afrophobic, typically manifest as targeted violence against immigrant-owned businesses and residential properties. The recurring nature of these incidents often leaves hundreds of Nigerians stranded or fearing for their lives, necessitating emergency interventions from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria.
Logistics of emergency evacuations
Evacuating citizens during active civil unrest involves significant costs, including the chartering of aircraft and the emergency processing of travel documents for those who may have lost their passports during attacks. By providing a direct cash injection of over $265,000, the RCCG is helping to offset the immediate financial burden of these operations.
