Why RCCG Removed Controversial Pastor in Charge of Richest Lagos Parish

The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) has removed Pastor Idowu Iluyomade from his position as the Senior Pastor of City of David Parish, Ikoyi, which is believed to be the church’s richest parish in Nigeria apart from the headquarter.

The church leadership reportedly took the action in reaction to the controversial 60th birthday celebration of Siju, Iluyomade’s wife and alleged mismanagement of the parish resources.

The issues

The pastor’s wife threw an elaborated birthday party shortly after the tragic passing of one of City of David’s key members and benefactor, Herbert Wigwe, the CEO of Access Bank.

This drew public attention, with many describing it as insensitive. But beyond that, the party was also criticised for parading circular musicians, and some critics said the gathering was disappointing considering she’s a pastor’s wife who is supposed to espouse Christian values.

The church’s decision also involved concerns regarding an internal audit and Pastor Iluyomade’s reluctance to accept a transfer from the City of David Parish.

“The church’s Governing Council met on two issues: an audit of the church where questions were asked and the issue that the pastor allegedly resisted transfer,” Punch cited an anonymous source who has knowledge of the matter.

Terms of Suspension

BEA gathered that Pastor Charles Kpandei from the church’s Resurrection Parish Region 11 has taken over the leadership role at City of David.

Pastor Iluyomade’s suspension will last for three months, after which he is expected to take up a new position at the church’s headquarters.

The specific details of his future responsibilities have not been disclosed yet.
