Richest Church Denominations in the World in 2025

In 2025, a new ranking of the world’s richest church denominations has drawn global attention to the enormous financial power held by some of Christianity’s biggest institutions.

These churches are not just spiritual centers but also economic giants, commanding billions of dollars in real estate, investments, donations, and centuries-old assets.

The ranking highlights how faith-based organizations, spread across continents, continue to hold influence not just in the religious sphere but also in global economics.

From Europe to the Americas, some of these denominations control fortunes that rival multinational corporations.

Here are the first five of the world’s wealthiest church denominations in 2025.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

Commonly known as the Mormon Church, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints sits at the top of the list with an estimated net worth of $293 billion. Much of this wealth is tied to a vast investment portfolio, expansive real estate holdings, and ecclesiastical properties.

Over the years, the church has become one of the most financially powerful religious bodies in the world, with influence that stretches far beyond Utah, where it is headquartered.

The Catholic Church in Germany

The German branch of the Catholic Church ranks second, with wealth estimated at $265.62 billion. A significant source of its income is a unique church tax imposed on registered members, which funnels billions annually into its treasury.

Combined with its land holdings and real estate investments, this financial base gives the Catholic Church in Germany one of the most secure and consistent revenue streams in the world.

The Catholic Church (Holy See/Vatican)

The Vatican itself remains one of the most mysterious and financially influential institutions globally. While its exact wealth is difficult to calculate due to the scope of its international holdings, estimates place its assets at over $10 billion.

With centuries of real estate acquisitions, art collections, and investments across industries, the Holy See commands vast resources. Beyond money, it wields unmatched global influence, making it one of the most powerful entities in both spiritual and economic terms.

The Church of England

The Church of England has steadily grown its endowment, which now stands at approximately $13.84 billion. Managed by the Church Commissioners, these funds generate significant returns, with reports showing strong growth in recent years.

The church uses these funds to support its mission, maintain historic cathedrals, and sustain social projects across the United Kingdom. With centuries-old traditions and carefully managed assets, the Church of England remains a formidable religious and financial institution.

The Church of Sweden

The Church of Sweden also makes the list with a net worth of over $11.41 billion. Unlike many others, its fortune is strongly tied to land ownership, particularly vast forest estates, alongside real estate and securities.

This wealth helps sustain its social and cultural programs, as well as its extensive network of properties. Despite declining membership over the years, the Church of Sweden remains a financial heavyweight in Europe’s religious landscape.
