Russia Expands Military Presence in Africa with Burkina Faso Deal

Russia is planning to expand its military influence in West Africa. A report from the Moscow Times revealed that during Russia’s Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, ‘s visit to Burkina Faso, both countries agreed to increase the number of Russian military trainers there.

Lavrov announced this in Ouagadougou, the capital of Burkina Faso, saying, “Russian instructors work here and their number will increase.”

He made this statement on Wednesday and added that Burkina Faso’s armed forces and security personnel will also receive training in Russia.

This initiative is part of Russia’s broader strategy to expand its African military influence.

For example, earlier in May, after a disagreement led to the expulsion of 1,000 U.S. troops from Niger, Russian troops entered the country.

They moved towards Airbase 101, located next to Niamey’s Diori Hamani International Airport.

Later in the same month, Niger’s Prime Minister, Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine, criticized American officials for trying to control which countries Niger can partner with and questioned why the U.S. military was in Niger.

This dispute opened the door for Russia to strengthen its military ties with Niger.

Additionally, in May, São Tomé and Príncipe, countries in Central Africa, decided to start a military partnership with Russia.

Their agreement covers joint military training, recruitment, use of military equipment, logistics, sharing experience in fighting extremism and terrorism, and educational programs for military personnel.

In the Arctic, Russia has improved its military infrastructure:

  • Reopening old military bases: Modernizing and reopening old Soviet-era bases.

  • Controlling the Northern Sea Route: Strengthening control over this strategic passage to assert dominance in the resource-rich region.
