Sanusi Lamido Sanusi Returns Again as Emir of Kano

Sanusi Lamido Sanusi II has returned as the Emir of Kano This came after the Kano State House of Assembly decided to not only dethrone the current Emir but also to dissolve the four new Emirates established under a controversial law in 2019.

This development has not been announced officially but according to a reliable source, this decision automatically reinstates Sanusi, with his arrival in Kano eagerly anticipated this Friday.

The Kano State House of Assembly, in a move that has stirred considerable public interest, passed a resolution that led to the repeal of the 2019 law that had fragmented the historic Kano Emirate.

This law, seen by many as a political strategy to reduce the influence of Sanusi, a forthright critic of previous governance under Abdullahi Ganduje, had diluted the power of the traditional Emirate Council by dividing its authority among five Emirates.

Lawan Hussaini Chediyar Yan Gurasa, the Majority Leader who sponsored the Amendment Bill, shortly after the legislative session said that the bill had been dispatched to the governor for his assent.  And with no current Emir across the five Emirates of Kano, Bichi, Gaya, Rano, and Karaye, the path is clear for a new chapter.

The community’s reaction has been a mix of surprise and approval. Many see this as a correction of a political wrong, a restoration of traditional dignity to the historic Kano Emirate. With the law repealed the traditional kingmakers are now expected to formally reinstate Sanusi as Emir.

Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, whose tenure was marked by progressive views and outspoken critiques of government policies, is regarded by many as a reformer. His anticipated return is seen not just as a personal victory but as a win for those advocating for governance that respects traditional structures and values.
