SDP presidential candidate criticises Tinubu’s poverty plan

Adewole Adebayo, the presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), has accused President Bola Tinubu of lacking innovative strategies to address the growing poverty crisis in Nigeria.

The SDP candidate argued that the administration must provide a transparent account of its economic management and present a coherent plan to alleviate hardship before the 2027 general elections. Adebayo’s remarks come at a time when many Nigerians are grappling with the consequences of recent macroeconomic reforms.

Speaking on the current economic trajectory, Adebayo emphasised that the presidency needs to move beyond existing frameworks to offer real relief to the most vulnerable citizens. He stated that the President’s current approach fails to address the structural roots of the country’s economic difficulties.

The critique was detailed in his assessment of the President’s poverty alleviation strategies, where he challenged the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to prove its effectiveness in managing the national economy.

Demand for economic accountability

Adebayo’s position points to the increasing pressure on the Tinubu administration to deliver tangible results following the removal of the fuel subsidy and the unification of foreign exchange windows. While the government maintains that these reforms are necessary for long-term stability, the immediate effect has been a surge in the cost of transportation, food, and essential services.

“Mr Adebayo said President Bola Tinubu should account for his administration’s handling of poverty and present Nigerians with a clear plan to address the country’s economic challenges ahead of the 2027 election,” the candidate stated, calling for a roadmap that prioritises social safety nets.

The demand for a clear economic roadmap arrives as Nigeria continues to face persistent inflationary pressures and food insecurity. Recent data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has consistently shown rising costs for basic commodities, which has placed an immense burden on the nation’s low-income households and increased the number of people living below the poverty line.

As the political landscape begins to shift towards the 2027 election cycle, the administration’s ability to demonstrate success in poverty reduction will likely become a central theme for opposition parties. The presidency has not yet issued a formal response to the specific claims made by the SDP candidate.
