The South East Development Commission (SEDC) has announced plans to flag off its first agro-mechanisation project in Enugu State. The move is intended to modernise farming practices within the region and increase food production through the deployment of agricultural machinery.
Mark Okoye, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the SEDC, disclosed the development during a site and community engagement visit to the Nomeh Unateze community in Nkanu East Local Government Area of Enugu State on Tuesday.
The visit allowed the commission’s leadership to assess the project site and consult with local community members before the official commencement of the programme.
Modernising agriculture in the South East
The upcoming project is part of the commission’s mandate to drive economic growth and social development across the five South East states. By introducing mechanisation, the SEDC aims to transition local farmers from subsistence-based methods to more commercially viable production models.
Agricultural productivity in the South East has historically been limited by a heavy reliance on manual labour and traditional farming tools. The introduction of modern machinery is expected to reduce the physical burden on farmers, decrease post-harvest losses, and allow for larger-scale cultivation of key crops.
The selection of Nkanu East for the first phase of this initiative focuses on areas with significant agricultural potential. During the engagement, Okoye stressed the importance of community involvement in ensuring the sustainability of the equipment and the long-term success of the project.
The SEDC was established to address infrastructure gaps and promote integrated development in the South East region. This agro-mechanisation initiative marks one of the commission’s first major steps into the agricultural sector, a sector critical to regional food security and employment.
The official flag-off ceremony for the project is expected to be announced by the commission in the coming weeks.
