Seplat Energy Plc has announced the discovery of an estimated 157 billion cubic feet (Bcf) of natural gas and 19 million barrels of oil in place at its Aku-01 exploration well in Nigeria.
The company confirmed the finding, which follows exploration activities concluded after the end of September 2026. The discovery is expected to bolster the company’s hydrocarbon production profile and provide long-term revenue opportunities through increased resource availability.
According to the announcement regarding the Aku-01 well discovery, the volumes represent the total estimated hydrocarbons present within the reservoir, commonly referred to as “in place” reserves.
Resource appraisal and production potential
For investors and energy analysts, the transition from “in place” figures to recoverable reserves will depend on subsequent appraisal drilling and technical studies. These studies will determine the flow rates and the commercial viability of the reservoir, which will dictate how much of the 157bcf of gas and 19 million barrels of oil can be economically extracted.
The discovery comes at a time when Seplat is focused on expanding its gas-to-power initiatives within Nigeria. As the federal government continues to push for increased domestic gas utilization to stabilise the national electricity grid, the 157bcf of gas found at Aku-01 could play a role in the company’s broader gas commercialisation strategy.
The inclusion of 19 million barrels of oil in the company’s resource base also offers a potential boost to its crude oil production capacity. This is relevant as Seplat seeks to maintain its growth trajectory amidst a shifting energy landscape in West Africa.
The company’s ability to identify new resources is essential for its long-term valuation and its capacity to meet future energy demands in the region. However, the actual impact on the company’s balance sheet will remain contingent on the costs associated with developing the field and the eventual production timelines.
Seplat has not yet released a specific timeline for the next phase of development or the commencement of production at the Aku-01 site. The company will likely need to conduct further technical evaluations to confirm the field’s commercial parameters.
