Silicon Valley’s Y Combinator Open Doors to 9 African Tech Startups

By July 7, 2021News around Africa

Silicon Valley-based Y-combinator accelerator has selected 9 African tech startups to participate in its S21 batch, receiving $125,000 each in seed funding at demo day as well as further investment opportunities down the line.

The S21 batch of Y Combinator will begin this month, with the famous programme culminating in a demo day in September.

So far, only nine of the participants have been announced. We can expect the rest as the programme continues. Nigeria and Egypt lead the list with three startups each. From Nigeria are Mecho Autotech, which connects car owners with mechanics and smart part vendors; Suplias, a B2B marketplace for small businesses; and Lemonade Finance, a payments solution startup.

The tech startups from Egypt on the list include licensed online insurance brokerage Amenli, car parts marketplace Odiggo and ShipBlu, a last mile e-commerce delivery startup .

Morrocan tech startups Chari, an e-commerce and fintech platform for retailers, and Freterium, a logistics SaaS platform. Completing the list is South Africa’s Floatpays , an early access wage platform.

“It’s an honour for us to participate in the S21 batch of Y Combinator. With my co-founder, we will belong to the very closed circle of YC Alumni, allowing us to benefit from a global network of brilliantly successful startups. This will create a lot of value for our startup,” said Ismael Belkhayat, chief executive officer (CEO) and co-founder of Chari.
