The Sokoto State Commissioner of Police, CP Hayatu Hassan Shaffa, has urged local government chairmen across the state to take a more active role in the fight against insecurity. The Commissioner emphasized that the success of police operations depends heavily on the cooperation and vigilance of local administrations.
Addressing the complexities of the current security landscape, Shaffa noted that local government leaders are uniquely positioned to provide critical information that could prevent crimes before they occur. By engaging with community members, traditional rulers, and local security groups, the chairmen can serve as a vital link between residents and the police command.
This call for increased involvement follows a series of security challenges in the state, including incidents of banditry and kidnapping that have frequently targeted rural communities. The Sokoto CP’s plea to LG chairmen suggests that a top-down approach by the police alone is insufficient without the active support and intelligence of grassroots leadership.
The importance of community intelligence
The Commissioner’s directive aims to bridge the intelligence gap that often allows criminal elements to operate within local communities undetected. Local government chairmen oversee the administrative structures that manage local security committees and informal security outfits, making their leadership central to any effective crime prevention strategy.
Beyond mere intelligence gathering, Shaffa’s position implies a need for better coordination between police resources and local administration assets. This includes the effective management of local hunters and community-based security outfits which, if properly coordinated with the state police, could provide a more robust defence against mobile criminal gangs.
While the police command continues to deploy personnel to identified hotspots, the security situation in parts of Northern Nigeria remains volatile. Security analysts have frequently argued that without the active participation of local government officials in monitoring their specific domains, the police will continue to struggle with responding to crimes after they have already been committed.
The Sokoto State Police Command has indicated its readiness to work with all local government authorities to implement these enhanced security measures. However, the effectiveness of this collaboration will depend on the willingness of the chairmen to prioritise security intelligence and community engagement within their local governance agendas.
