Omoyele Sowore has dismissed the arrest of 11 suspects linked to his attack in Ekiti, alleging that the current police investigation is part of a cover-up.
The activist has called on the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to bypass the existing investigative process by establishing an independent team to probe the incident. This demand follows the Nigeria Police Force’s announcement regarding the apprehension of 11 individuals suspected of involvement in the attack.
Mr Sowore argued that the arrests do not constitute a thorough investigation. He urged the police leadership to secure and analyse all available CCTV footage from the scene and surrounding areas to ensure the actual perpetrators are identified and brought to justice.
Furthermore, the activist is demanding the immediate recovery of stolen electronic devices and the preservation of all electronic and communication records related to the incident. He expressed concern that without these specific forensic steps, the integrity of the entire investigation remains compromised.
Demands for forensic accountability
The call for an independent probe comes at a time of increased scrutiny over the capacity of the Nigeria Police Force to conduct impartial investigations into high-profile cases involving prominent political figures. By requesting a team outside the current command structure, Sowore is signalling a lack of confidence in the findings released so far.
The emphasis on digital evidence—specifically CCTV footage and communication logs—suggests that the activist believes the physical arrests may not account for the full scope of the conspiracy behind the attack. He noted that the recovery of stolen devices is critical to establishing the motive and the identities of those who may have orchestrated the incident from a distance.
The Nigeria Police Force has not yet issued a formal rebuttal to the allegations of a cover-up. However, the arrest of the 11 suspects was presented by the authorities as a significant breakthrough in resolving the case.
The growing pressure for transparency places the Inspector-General of Police in a position where he must decide whether to maintain the current investigative trajectory or grant Sowore’s request for an external, independent team. The decision will likely impact public confidence in the police’s ability to provide security and justice for high-profile targets in the country.
