The Ibadan Chapter of the Society of Women Accountants of Nigeria (SWAN) has conducted a career mentorship and financial literacy session at Basorun/Ojoo High School. The visit, held under the theme ‘Catch Them Young’, was designed to expose students to the accounting profession and encourage early interest in financial management.
The outreach programme at Basorun/Ojoo High School focused on providing students with practical insights into the importance of professional accounting and the ethical standards required in the finance industry. Members of the SWAN Ibadan Chapter engaged the students on topics ranging from basic bookkeeping to the long-term benefits of pursuing chartered professional qualifications.
By targeting students at the secondary school level, SWAN aims to bridge the gap between academic theory and professional practice. The initiative seeks to inspire young learners, particularly young women, to consider accounting as a viable and impactful career path in Nigeria’s evolving economy.
Promoting Financial Literacy and Professional Ethics
The programme comes at a time when financial literacy has become a critical component of the Nigerian educational discourse. The outreach also provided a platform for students to ask questions regarding the academic requirements and the professional examinations necessary to become a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) or the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN).
The school administration noted that such professional interventions are vital for preparing students for life beyond the classroom. The engagement provided the students with a realistic view of the discipline, moving beyond textbook definitions to the practical application of financial principles.
SWAN remains a key professional body in Nigeria, advocating for gender equality within the finance sector and promoting the professional interests of women accountants. Through its various social responsibility projects, the organisation seeks to address the gender gap in leadership roles within the financial services industry.
The Ibadan Chapter of SWAN indicated that the “Catch Them Young” initiative will continue to be rolled out across various schools in the state to expand its reach and impact.
