Today, it functions as the administrative headquarters for the monarchy.

The palace itself is vast, encompassing about 828,000 square feet. It boasts 775 bedrooms, 78 bathrooms, 92 offices, and 19 state rooms. The property also features a 40-acre garden, adding to its grandeur.

A Rich History

Originally constructed in 1703 as a large townhouse for Duke Buckingham, the structure was designed by architect William Winde.

In 1761, King George III bought the house for Queen Charlotte, who used it as a personal residence known then as the Queen’s House. It was later transformed into the grand palace we recognise today by King George IV.

Buckingham Palace is filled with intriguing features, including numerous secret tunnels leading out to the streets of London, over 40,000 light bulbs to light up the estate, and a staggering count of 760 windows and 1,514 doors.

Ownership and Sale

Unlike private properties, Buckingham Palace is not owned by the monarch personally. It is held in trust by the Crown Estates for future generations, which is why it cannot be put on the market.
