Tinubu Approves Recruitment of 50,000 Police Officers, Assures Nigerians on Safe Return of Abducted Students
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the recruitment of more than 50,000 police officers and several thousand military personnel as part of a comprehensive effort to bolster Nigeria’s security infrastructure.
The announcement came during his Democracy Day address on 12 June 2026, where he also expressed optimism over the safe release of schoolchildren abducted in Oyo and Borno States.
While the celebrations marked 27 years of uninterrupted civilian rule, recent security incidents involving abductions tempered the mood. Tinubu reassured Nigerians that the government is actively working to ensure the return of the affected pupils.
Security as the Foundation of Democracy
The President emphasised that security underpins a functional democracy, noting that governance cannot thrive in environments plagued by fear and instability. “Democracy without security is not solid enough,” he stated, stressing the importance of proactive measures to protect citizens.
Highlighting his administration’s commitment, Tinubu announced that a security emergency has been declared, with initiatives underway to enhance the effectiveness and reach of law enforcement and military operations across the country.
Police and Military Recruitment Plans
In addition to ongoing security measures, the President approved the recruitment of more than 50,000 police officers and thousands of additional military personnel.
These steps aim to strengthen the nation’s capability to respond to criminal and terrorist threats, improve community policing, and restore public confidence in national security.
The 2026 national budget allocates ₦5.41 trillion to defence and security, the largest allocation in Nigeria’s history. Tinubu described the investment as a key pillar in safeguarding lives and ensuring that citizens can live and work without fear.
Firm Stance Against Criminality
President Tinubu issued a stern warning to bandits, kidnappers, and terror sponsors, urging them to surrender or face decisive action from the Nigerian state.
He made it clear that opportunities for surrender would not remain indefinitely, emphasising that those who exploit citizens’ lives for ransom or violence will face the full force of the law.
He also cautioned Nigerians against assigning ethnic or divisive interpretations to criminal acts, reminding the public that crime has no ethnicity and that unity is essential in tackling insecurity.
Hope for Abducted Pupils
While acknowledging the distress caused by the abduction of schoolchildren in Oyo and Borno, Tinubu expressed confidence in ongoing rescue efforts.
He assured Nigerians that security agencies are deploying all necessary resources to secure the safe return of the students and restore confidence in communities affected by the incidents.
Call for National Unity
The President urged all Nigerians to stand united in addressing insecurity, stressing collaboration between citizens, security agencies, and local stakeholders. He emphasised that a coordinated national response is essential to counter threats and ensure that no community is left vulnerable.
