Tinubu cites personal education struggles as basis for NELFUND

President Bola Tinubu has linked the creation of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) to his personal experiences of working to fund his studies abroad. The President stated that his own struggles to afford schooling shaped his conviction that financial constraints should not prevent Nigerian children from accessing higher education.

During a discussion regarding the objectives of the loan scheme, the President revealed that he drove a taxi in the United States to cover the costs of his tuition and accommodation while pursuing his education. He noted that these hardships provided him with a direct understanding of the difficulties students face when academic goals clash with financial realities.

The President emphasised that the NELFUND initiative is designed to ensure that every Nigerian child has access to equal opportunities, regardless of their family’s financial circumstances or socioeconomic background.

Expanding access to tertiary education

The NELFUND scheme was established by the administration to provide credit facilities to students in federal tertiary institutions across the country. The fund is intended to alleviate the burden of tuition fees, books, and living expenses, which have become increasingly difficult for many Nigerian families to manage due to current economic pressures and inflation.

The President’s comments on the motivations behind the fund come at a time when the rising cost of living in Nigeria has made higher education a significant financial hurdle for many households.

By providing these loans, the government aims to prevent a situation where capable students are forced to abandon their studies due to an inability to pay fees. The administration’s policy focuses on creating a safety net that allows students to prioritise their academic performance over the immediate stress of funding their daily upkeep and school requirements.

The implementation of the loan scheme involves a digital application process intended to streamline access for eligible students. The government has indicated that the focus will remain on reaching those from the most vulnerable backgrounds to ensure the programme meets its intended social impact.

As the fund continues its roll-out, the administration is expected to focus on the integration of student verification processes with various institutional databases to ensure the efficient and transparent disbursement of funds to qualified applicants.
