President Bola Tinubu has announced the operationalisation of new Nigerian Army formations in Zamfara, Kebbi, Oyo, and Osun states to improve response times to security threats. The move is intended to decentralise command and increase the military’s presence in areas facing persistent violence.
The President disclosed the development on Sunday in a post on his official X handle, stating that the restructuring aims to bolster the operational capacity of the Armed Forces. He also noted that the administration is implementing measures to improve the welfare of military personnel.
By establishing these new formations, the government expects a more rapid reaction to incidents of banditry, kidnapping, and armed robbery. This strategic deployment targets both the North West and South West geopolitical zones, where security challenges have disrupted local economies and civilian safety.
Regional security and military command restructuring
The operationalisation in Zamfara and Kebbi states addresses the high levels of banditry and mass kidnappings that have plagued the North West. These states serve as critical agricultural hubs, and the persistent insecurity has significantly impacted food production and the livelihoods of rural communities. A more concentrated military presence in these areas is expected to disrupt the movement of armed groups and provide better protection for farming communities.
In the South West, the new formations in Oyo and Osun states are aimed at tackling the rise in kidnapping and armed robbery. These states have seen an increase in criminal activities that threaten regional stability and the safety of commuters along major transit routes. The new structures are designed to improve the synergy between local intelligence gathering and tactical response units on the ground.
This restructuring follows a period of growing pressure on the military to adapt its tactics to non-traditional security threats. Decentralising command structures allows field officers to make quicker decisions based on real-time intelligence, rather than waiting for directives from central headquarters in distant locations.
The President’s emphasis on soldier welfare is also a key component of this update. Improving the living conditions, medical support, and equipment availability for troops is considered essential for maintaining morale during active operations in hostile environments.
The military command is expected to provide further details regarding the specific deployment schedules and the permanent locations of these new operational hubs in the affected states.
