Tinubu Hails $800m Ima Gas Project Investment Decision

President Bola Tinubu has welcomed the $800 million Final Investment Decision (FID) for the Ima gas project, a move set to unlock a gas resource that has remained untapped for five decades.

The project represents a milestone for Nigeria’s energy sector, marking the fourth major gas-related FID achieved since the current administration took office. It follows the successful investment decisions for the Iseni, Ubeta, and HI gas projects, indicating a steady progression in the development of the country’s gas assets.

The $800 million commitment is expected to enhance domestic gas supply, providing necessary feedstock for power generation and industrial applications. By tapping into the Ima field, the government aims to strengthen energy security and reduce the economic impact of gas scarcity in key manufacturing hubs.

Growth in Nigeria’s gas sector investments

The decision to proceed with the Ima project comes after the resource sat dormant for fifty years. The ability to finally mobilise capital for such a long-standing asset reflects the administration’s focus on revitalising the upstream sector through improved investment frameworks.

The successful Ima gas project Final Investment Decision is the latest in a series of developments aimed at monetising Nigeria’s vast natural gas reserves. The sequence of FIDs, including Iseni, Ubeta, and HI, suggests a growing momentum in attracting private capital to the energy sector despite global economic fluctuations.

For the Nigerian economy, the project is expected to contribute to increased non-oil revenue and provide employment opportunities within the engineering and technical services sectors. The gas produced is intended to support the domestic market, helping to mitigate the power shortages that frequently affect industrial productivity.

As the project moves into its next phase of implementation, stakeholders will be monitoring the development of the necessary midstream infrastructure to ensure the gas reaches its intended destinations. The timeline for the commencement of production remains a key focus for industry observers and energy regulators.
