Tinubu launches $100m gas pipeline project for South-east

President Bola Tinubu has announced the commencement of a $100 million gas pipeline project designed to expand energy access across the South-east region of Nigeria.

The project, which aims to bridge the energy gap currently hindering industrial activity, will be implemented through the South-east Development Commission (SEDC).

By establishing this gas infrastructure, the Federal Government intends to provide a more reliable energy source for industrial clusters and power plants, potentially reducing the high costs associated with alternative energy sources in the region.

The announcement follows plans to initiate the $100 million gas pipeline project to address regional development needs and energy security.

SEDC to lead implementation and oversight

The South-east Development Commission has been tasked with the execution of the project, ensuring that the pipeline network meets the specific energy requirements of the five south-eastern states. The commission’s involvement is intended to align the project with broader regional development goals established under the current administration.

For many businesses in the region, particularly in the manufacturing and food processing sectors, the lack of consistent gas supply has necessitated a reliance on diesel generators. This dependency has increased operational costs and reduced the competitiveness of South-eastern industries.

The new pipeline is expected to connect gas supply points directly to industrial hubs, providing a more cost-effective and stable energy alternative. This shift is anticipated to support the growth of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that form the backbone of the regional economy.

While the funding and implementation agency have been confirmed, the specific construction timeline and the detailed route of the pipeline are yet to be released. The SEDC is expected to provide further technical updates on the project’s progress and the specific communities that will benefit from the infrastructure in the coming months.
