What Is the Visa Openness Index?

The AVOI, created by the African Development Bank (AfDB), measures how open African countries are to visitors from other African nations.

The goal is to encourage free movement of people, which helps improve trade, tourism, and regional cooperation.

“Visas, their processes, and high costs are barriers we need to remove to build the Africa we want,” said Nnenna Lily Nwabufo, AfDB Vice President for Regional Development.

Some African countries have made it easy for people from other African nations to visit without a visa or by offering visas on arrival.

However, many countries still have strict visa rules, making it hard to travel freely within the continent.

Poorer countries like Benin, Rwanda, and The Gambia are the most open, offering visa-free travel to all Africans.

Wealthier countries tend to have stricter rules, worrying about economic migration or illegal travel.
