Top 10 Nigerian States with the Highest Cooking Gas Prices
The rising prices of cooking gas (LPG) and petrol (PMS) are putting a lot of pressure on Nigerian households, leading many to switch to cheaper options like charcoal and firewood.
According to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), the cost of refilling a 12kg gas cylinder went up by 76.41%, from N9,247.40 in September 2023 to N16,313.43 in September 2024.
On a month-to-month basis, the price increased by 4.89%, rising from N15,552.56 in August 2024.
The steady rise in prices has been linked to the falling value of the Naira and Nigeria’s heavy reliance on importing gas.
Olatunbosun Oladapo, President of the Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers (NALPGAM), explained that foreign exchange challenges are making it harder for importers to get the funds they need, which is pushing up costs for consumers.

The increase also affected smaller gas cylinders. The price of refilling a 5kg cylinder went up to N6,699.63 in September 2024, a 4.19% rise from N6,430.02 in August 2024, and a 59.90% jump from N4,189.96 in September 2023.
According to NBS data, Rivers State had the highest cost for refilling a 12kg gas cylinder at N17,992.86, followed by Gombe at N17,742.86 and Zamfara at N17,475.00. Here are the top 10 states with the highest prices:

On the other hand, the cheapest states to refill a 12kg cylinder were Adamawa at N13,983.33, Nasarawa at N14,938.50, and Bauchi at N15,000.00.
